The Importance of Fasting in Islam

Fasting, known as 'Sawm' (صوم) in Arabic, is the fourth pillar of Islam. It involves abstaining from food, drink, and marital relations from dawn until sunset for the purpose of gaining Taqwa (God-consciousness).

Allah says in the Quran: "O you who believe, fasting is prescribed for you as it was prescribed for those before you, that you may attain Taqwa (God-consciousness)." (2:183)

Beyond the physical abstention, fasting in Islam encompasses refraining from all sinful actions, including lying, backbiting, and arguments. The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said: "Whoever does not give up false speech and evil actions, Allah is not in need of his leaving his food and drink." (Bukhari)

Ramadan Fasting

Fasting during the month of Ramadan is obligatory upon every adult, sane, and healthy Muslim. This blessed month is when the Quran was first revealed as guidance for humanity.

Requirements for a Valid Fast

  • Intention (niyyah) made before dawn each day
  • Abstaining from food, drink, and marital relations from dawn (Fajr) to sunset (Maghrib)
  • Refraining from invalidating actions like intentional vomiting

The Daily Routine in Ramadan

  1. Suhoor - The pre-dawn meal, which is recommended to delay until shortly before Fajr
  2. Fasting Period - From dawn until sunset, with increased worship and Quran recitation
  3. Iftar - Breaking the fast at sunset, preferably with dates and water following the Prophetic tradition
  4. Taraweeh Prayer - Special night prayers performed during Ramadan

Laylatul Qadr (The Night of Decree)

This is the most blessed night of the year, believed to fall on one of the odd nights of the last ten days of Ramadan. Worship on this night is better than a thousand months of worship. Muslims are encouraged to increase their prayers, supplications, and Quran recitation during these nights.

Voluntary Fasting

In addition to the obligatory fasting during Ramadan, there are many voluntary fasts that Muslims are encouraged to observe throughout the year:

Mondays & Thursdays

The Prophet ﷺ regularly fasted on these days, saying: "Deeds are presented (to Allah) on Mondays and Thursdays, and I like my deeds to be presented while I am fasting."

Ayyam al-Beed (White Days)

Fasting on the 13th, 14th, and 15th of each lunar month, when the moon is at its fullest.

Six Days of Shawwal

Fasting six days in the month following Ramadan. The Prophet ﷺ said whoever fasts Ramadan and follows it with six days of Shawwal, it is as if they fasted the entire year.

Day of Arafah

Fasting on the 9th day of Dhul-Hijjah (for those not performing Hajj). The Prophet ﷺ said it expiates the sins of the previous year and the coming year.

Day of Ashura

Fasting on the 10th of Muharram, commemorating Allah's salvation of Prophet Musa (Moses). It is recommended to fast the 9th or 11th along with it.

Alternate Days

Known as the fast of Prophet Dawud (David), fasting every other day is described as the most beloved fasting to Allah according to the Prophet ﷺ.
